Short Changed: Are pensioners getting a good deal?

Short Changed: Are pensioners getting a good deal?

Date: 1pm-3pm, Thursday 21st May 2009

Location: Westminster Suite, Broadway House, Tothill Street, SW1H 9NQ

Speakers: Lord McKenzie of Luton, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Steve Kyle, Director of Just Retirement Solutions

Chair: Ian Mulheirn, Director, SMF

The Social Market Foundation will host this event to examine whether the current annuity market is fit for purpose and to determine whether, in an age of extending retirement, the Government and the regulator could do more to ensure that individuals receive the best value for money from their pensions.

Key questions to be addressed are:

  • A well-functioning and competitive market could work better for everyone. Should HM Treasury, DWP the FSA be doing more to encourage a competitive market?
  • Are existing regulations sufficient to stimulate a competitive environment?
  • How can we ensure all people receive the necessary advice to help them make the right choice about how to receive their pension?
  • How can we ensure people are more aware about the decisions they can make with regard to annuitisation?
  • Should we force people to annuitise at 75 or would it be preferable to let people choose what they wish to do with their retirement funds?

Buffet lunch will be provided.
