In December last year the Treasury published the Gowers Review of Intellectual Property. The Report argued that in the modern world, the UK's economic competitiveness is increasingly driven by knowledge-based industries, innovation and creativity. Thus, Intellectual Property - protecting and promoting innovation - has never been more important. Whilst the Review concluded that the UK has a fundamentally strong IP system, it set out important reforms aiming to strengthen enforcement, provide additional support for businesses and strike the right balance between competitive markets and future innovation.

Following on from National Consumer Week the SMF hosted a conference with the Alliance Against Intellectual Property Theft to explore the issues around IP with a particular focus on the consumer interest – including digital piracy, counterfeiting and online trading.

The conference was opened by Lord Triesman, Minister for Intellectual Property and Quality, DIUS followed by a panel discussion with a consumer representative, digital and physical rights holders and online companies.
