Over recent years the NHS has received an unprecedented increase in investment. Billions of pounds have been spent to bring UK health spending into line with the rest of Europe. NHS performance has clearly improved as a result of this extra spending – waiting lists have come down, extra staff have been employed and patients have much more choice over their treatment. However, now that NHS funding increases are set to slow, the challenge is for the service to become ever more effective and efficient – removing waste that ultimately means a bad deal for patients. The fringe event(s) should explore how the NHS can get better value for money through its purchasing and the services it provides and consider the following key questions:

  • How can Primary Care Trusts become more efficient and effective in providing services?
  • What roles can private providers play in supporting effective commissioning?
  • How can commissioners make sure that patients get the best deal when negotiating with powerful providers?
  • How can we change the culture of the NHS to encourage a greater emphasis on securing good value for taxpayers’ money?
