“Benefit in return for contributions, rather than free allowances from the State, is what the people of Britain desire”
William Beveridge, 1942
In his third speech to mark the 70th anniversary of the Beveridge Report, Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP will set out his view that the current benefit system has been reduced to a ‘money for nothing’ deal for working people, and explore how we can instead restore the idea of ‘something for something’ in welfare.
Drawing on emerging thinking, the speech will examine the Government’s welfare reform agenda and what can be done to tackle the challenges to implementation.
