The COVID-19 gender gap: the impact of the pandemic on gender inequalities in the labour market

At this virtual Ask the Expert panel event, held in partnership with UK Research and Innovation, we explored the impact of COVID-19 on gender inequalities in the UK labour market.

At this event, Director of the CEPR Labour Economics Programme, Professor Barbara Petrongolo presented new data drawn from Understanding Society’s COVID-19 supplement– a longitudinal study of the impact of coronavirus on UK households.

Recent research has revealed that the coronavirus outbreak has had an immediate adverse effect on the existing inequalities that impact women in the labour market. Despite much work towards ending these pre-existing inequalities, will the pandemic set back the progress already made? What can we do to prevent this, and what measures can we take to ensure that progress is continued to be made during this time of uncertainty?
