SMF Senior Researcher
Location: Westminster, London, with optional home-working for part of the week
Start date: As soon as possible
Salary: In the region of £37k pa
The Social Market Foundation is a think-tank based at Westminster working to answer the major political and economic challenges of the day. Our work is consulted by senior politicians and officials and reported in the national media.
We are currently looking to appoint a Senior Researcher to join our research team.
The successful candidate will carry out original research and lead SMF’s work on energy and environmental issues. They will also contribute our work on public service reform, Britain’s future outside the EU, making consumer markets work for all, and the role of skills and education in delivering a fairer, stronger economy.
About the role
As a Senior Researcher at the SMF you will:
- Lead and manage research projects from initial conception through to publication and launch
- Carry out original public policy research that has impact on policymaking
- Undertake quantitative and qualitative analysis
- Write (jointly and alone) reports, opinion pieces and articles
- Represent the SMF externally at meetings with senior stakeholders and funders as well as at events and in the media
- Support the communication of our research through social media and other channels
- Be central to developing new policy ideas and thinking at the SMF, including by proposing and planning new projects and research programmes
- Contribute to the professional development of colleagues in the research team
What we’re looking for
We are looking for someone who can conceive, manage and deliver public policy research projects, using a range of research techniques and working with colleagues to maximise the quality and impact of your work.
As an ideal candidate you will have:
- Project management experience, working on public policy projects not just as a researcher but owning modules/workstreams and acting as lead author
- Interest in and knowledge of energy and environmental policy issues
- Experience in undertaking quantitative analysis. Experience in handling large datasets using statistical software – such as Stata or R – would be desirable
- Experience in undertaking qualitative research: recruiting participants, conducting interviews/focus groups and analysing the data they produce would also be desirable.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting research findings to senior stakeholders
- Excellent planning and organisation skills and an attention to detail
- Ability to work quickly and under pressure when necessary
- A keen interest in UK public policy and politics, and a commitment to the aims and objectives of the SMF

Interview dates: Interviews will be held week commencing Monday 16th January. Candidates for interview will be asked to complete a short written task in advance which will be discussed during the interview.
