‘Ask The Expert’ – Inheritance and inequality with IFS’s Andrew Hood

The SMF’s Ask The Expert series, in association with the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), brings academic research on public policy into the heart of Westminster.

This seminar featured Andrew Hood, a senior research economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), who discussed the potential impact of inheritances on inequality, between, and within, generations.

Previous work by Andrew and his colleagues at the IFS shows that younger generations are finding it harder to accumulate wealth than their predecessors, while at the same time older individuals are holding more wealth than ever before. As a result, the wealth of younger generations looks set to depend more on who their parents are than was the case for previous generations, with important implications for inequality and social mobility.
