Across the English-speaking world, countries are declaring a housing crisis. Housing affordability dominated election discussions in Australia and New Zealand, and looks set to do the same in Canada and Ireland. Their solutions have met with mixed success, and the UK can learn lessons from their experience to apply here at home.
Planning reform is becoming more popular across these countries to increase the rate of housebuilding. The Social Market Foundation’s new report – Beyond the comfort zone: How can planning reform boost housing supply and affordability – funded by the Nuffield Foundation – unpacks the evidence from across the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, and explores the key lessons for policymakers in the UK as we head towards a general election.
