It’s Prices, Stupid: Explaining Falling Crime in the UK

This SMF and CAGE event launched a briefing paper by Dr Mirko Draca: ‘It’s Prices, Stupid: Explaining Falling Crime in the UK, 2002-2012.

The event was held association with the University of Warwick’s Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy (CAGE).

Speaker
Dr Mirko Draca, University of Warwick

Crime has fallen across many countries since the early 1990s. There are a number of plausible explanations, including police resources, demographic factors, and incarceration rates. However, nobody has looked closely at the effects of changes in the prices of commonly stolen goods.

At this event, Dr Mirko Draca will present new research showing a strong relationship between changes in prices and levels of crime, and will go on to discuss the policy implications of his findings.
