Promoting potential: how to improve jobs, boost growth, and unlock social mobility in every corner of the UK

At this event we explored how regional economic growth and better employment opportunities are key to supporting social mobility.

Recent analysis from the Social Mobility Commission shows that outcomes for lower working-class young people are considerably worse in comparison to other socio-economic groups, with 21% of lower working-class young people not in employment, education, or training, compared to 9-11% of young people from higher professional, lower professional and intermediate backgrounds. Geographic inequalities are a key feature of social mobility, and every corner of the UK needs to see better employment opportunities, and growth in productivity and economic output if social mobility outcomes are to improve.

Speakers:

  • Alison McGovern MP, Shadow Minister for Employment and Social Security
  • Rob Wilson, Deputy Chair, Social Mobility Commission
  • Jon Gibson, Head of Policy and Public Affairs, West Midlands Combined Authority
