School Admissions

This report, produced by an internal SMF Commission, proposes ballots as a means of allocating places in oversubscribed schools.

It is argued this would offer the poorest children the same prospects of entering the best schools as the richest, taking away the phenomenon of ‘house price premiums’ associated with schools in good catchments areas. This would have the added effect of forcing schools to concentrate on improving standards in order to achieve good results, rather than relying on the quality of their intake.
