Ask the Expert: The ethnicity pay gap

Our Ask The Expert series, in association with the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC); a part of UK Research and Innovation, brings academic research on public policy into the heart of Westminster.

In this Ask the Expert seminar we heard from Dr Simonetta Longhi, Associate Professor at the Department of Economics at the University of Reading and Research Fellow of the Institute for the Study of Labour (IZA).

In the UK, as in most developed countries, ethnic minorities on average are paid less than white British people. In this talk, Dr Longhi will give a brief overview of ethnic pay gaps in the UK and will discuss various possible reasons for the observed differences.  Particular attention will be paid to what the analysis of average pay gaps can and cannot reveal.  The talk will conclude with some thoughts on what this may mean for ethnicity pay reporting.
